Playgroup: Everything Parents Need to Know
The playgroup is many children's first step into the world beyond the family. It is ideal preparation for kindergarten and promotes social skills, language, and independence.
What Is a Playgroup?
Playgroups are half-day programs for children from approx. 2.5 years. Children meet 1–2 times per week for 2–3 hours in a fixed group of 8–12 children. The focus is on free play.
Types of Playgroups
- Indoor playgroups — In fixed premises with varied play materials
- Forest playgroups — Outdoors in the forest, in all weather
- Farm playgroups — On a farm with animals and nature
- Music playgroups — Focus on music and rhythm
- Inclusive playgroups — For children with and without disabilities
- Playgroups with language support — Especially for non-German-speaking children
Costs
CHF 14–25 per half-day (2–3 hours). With 2 half-days per week: CHF 110–200 per month.
Why Is the Playgroup Important?
- Separation — Children learn to separate from their parents
- Social skills — Sharing, waiting, resolving conflicts
- Language development — Especially important for multilingual children
- Independence — Putting on a jacket, washing hands, tidying up
- Kindergarten preparation — Group rules, daily structure
Mandatory German Language Support (Basel-Stadt)
In Basel-Stadt, children without sufficient German language skills must attend a German-speaking playgroup, daycare, or family daycare for at least 3 half-days per week in the year before kindergarten.
Tips for Getting Started
- Visit the playgroup beforehand with your child
- Start with short visits
- Give your child a comfort toy to bring along
- Talk positively about the playgroup
- Stay in communication with the playgroup leader
